About

The Houston Academy for International Studies is a new Houston Independent school district charter school that will be opening in August 2006. The school will focus on preparing students for college and their roles in our society as global citizens. It will be a small school, opening initially to just 100 9 th graders and adding 100 students each year.

The Academy will be a partnership with the Houston Independent School District, the Houston Community College Central Campus, Houston A+ Challenge and the Asia Society’s Network of International Studies Schools. This collaboration will provide important resources and connections for our students including the opportunity to take college courses while enrolled in high school. Small schools mean rigor, relevance and relationships
A dedicated expert faculty will provide rigorous, inquiry-based instruction and lead small advisory groups, providing focused guidance for every student throughout the high school years.

What are international studies?
International studies means learning about the geography, history, culture and languages of other world regions. All courses will examine themes of international interdependency.

Why does it matter?
Currently, one in six U.S. jobs is tied to international trade. Careers in the arts, science, academia, healthcare and many other sectors also depend on international exchange. This will only increase in the coming decades. The world of tomorrow is being shaped in our classrooms today.
