Model United Nations (MUN)
In Model United Nations, every student is a diplomat. Using the actual United Nations organization in New York City as a model, students will learn to analyze international issues and crises, research and write position papers based on a specific country’s point of view and argue from multiple perspectives on various global concerns.
Members of the HAIS chapter of the Model United Nations will work towards a place on the MUN traveling squad. In the past, these students have competed in annual UN simulations in San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and at the United Nations building in New York City.
Field Trips and Global Speakers
HAIS believes that field trips and international key-note speakers are essential to creating globally aware citizens. Here at HAIS, we continually strive to host key-note speakers, which include former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Her Majesty Queen Noor (Queen of Jordan), and many more. Our HAIS speaker series strives to meet with the entire student body once a month in the HCC central auditorium.
Due to our location on the Houston Community College Central Campus, HAIS is able to easily participate in field trips to the local museums, monuments, and theaters of downtown Houston. Prior field trips include the Holocaust museum, the Islamic Da’wah Center of Houston, the Houston Museum of Natural History and Science, and the Junior League of the World Affairs Council.
Scholarships for Student Travel
As an international school, the Houston Academy of International Studies is committed to bringing the whole world to our students. Although HAIS achieves this goal with a globally focused integrated curriculum, we also wish to expose our students to the world through international travel. With our International Studies Coordinator, HAIS is able to provide scholarships and mentoring programs to provide our students with all the resources they need to be successful in any part of the world. Through various organizations, HAIS is able to provide even funding to those dedicated to learning and improving our global world. For a list of previous HAIS student travelers, click here.
